Home Business Fulfilment... by Amazon?

Having spent all of our hard earned cash at Amazon this Christmas, it's time to use it to make a little bit back - and maybe even grow our home business at the same time. A new service from the online retail giant promises to do just that. Here's San Sharma with news of the amusingly titled Fulfilment by Amazon.

Fulfilment by Amazon

They started with books, then it was CDs. Now Amazon are selling Fulfilment? They've clearly gone mad, but there's a method to the madness. Amazon Fulfilment is a new service that promises to grow your business, improve your customer satisfaction and increase sales.

Here's how it works:

  • You send your products to Amazon
  • Amazon stores your products
  • Customers buy your products (hopefully!)
  • Amazon picks and packs your products
  • Amazon ships products to customers

Amazon is known for its on-time delivery service and its professional (if somewhat wasteful) packing - and now you can pass those benefits onto your customer.

You must have an Amazon Pro Merchant account to register for FBA. That starts at 86p per sale or £28.75 per month for unlimited sales. Amazon Fulfilment is priced by storage space, handling, 'pick and pack' and weight.

Comment: Great article on the fulfillment of products and you have my ideas flowing. We will definitely look into integrating their fulfillment API into the aitendant sales, service and customer self management platform.

Comment: I'm not quite convinced by FBA. First of how many small / start-up e-tailers hold physical stock, if you do run a business that requires physical stock and have the finances to hold stock why use Amazon? It's all well and good to say because everyone knows and trusts Amazon.. but in the long run it does no justice to your own brand, it remains fairly unknown. Most distributors these days have their own fulfilment service why bother running off Amazons back. For me creating a well known trusted brand is as important as making money. Even if you sell through multi-channel, you pay to send your stock to Amazon, then they charge you to store, process and deliver it, hmmm. Clever move my Amazon.
