An interesting partnership between wireless startup, FON, and the BT Group may result in free nationwide wi-fi in the UK.
The 'BT FON Community' will cover the entire UK with hundreds of thousands of BT FON hotspots. The idea is a little left-ish - and I like it! Basically, it means that if you share your wi-fi connection, you get access to others for free - all over the country.
This from the FON blog:
Every person in the UK who agrees to share a small portion of their home broadband connection will be able to share the connection of any other member. Anyone joining in will be able to use those FON hotspots across the world and all the new BT FON hotspots free of charge.
From the very beginning, all of you, Foneros, believed in the concept of sharing and in people's ability to build something important that would benefit everyone. BT is one of the most important telcos and ISPs in the world, so with BT FON those beliefs have proved to be well-founded!
It's a pretty cool idea, I think. I love the idea of flexible working, working out of coffee shops and other "third spaces", but the cost and availability of wi-fi in this country is pretty ridiculous.
What do you think? Will you be sharing your wi-fi pie for a slice of your neighbours? Tell us what you think in the comments below. – San Sharma

Comment: Aren't there security issues about what is effectively piggybacking? It's a great idea though - I'd certainly go for it.

Comment: I've just had a long look at the site. If it's as good as it sounds, then I'm sold - there are even international spots (I often need to work near Barcelona and there are loads). I've joined.
